Classroom Volunteer Orientation and Training! A new orientation and training session for classroom volunteers will be offered Tuesday November 18th
at 8:15am and 6pm. This program is being offered for all new and
current volunteers working in the classrooms at HPE. The training will
provide a general orientation for volunteering within the classroom,
tips on successful tutoring in math, reading, student assessment,
facilitating book club discussions, as well as provide time for
questions and answers between volunteers and the classroom teachers. Please contact Rita at 293-8770 to register!

We are investigating story elements which include: setting (location, time, weather, social conditions, mood or atmosphere); characters (identify the protagonist and antagonist); point of view; conflict/problem (internal/external, man vs. man, man vs. society, man vs. circumstances, man vs. himself/herself); plot; climax; resolution/conclusion; theme. For homework each night we require 45-60 minutes of
independent reading time. They are to read a "just right" book or
article of their choice.

Math Workshop 5th Grade:
Mrs. Savard's and Ms. Teske's Class: In Mrs. Savard's and Ms. Teske's class we will begin the year learning / reviewing basic multiplication and division facts. It is ESSENTIAL that all students know their math multiplication facts from 1-12. If this is an area of needed development for your student, please use multiplication flash cards to help your child secure these facts.
Ms. Teske's Math class is currently on Unit 4: Division. In this unit students learn how to complete long division problems with both whole number and decimal dividends. Students also must solve word problems that require long-division. They must learn to interpret remainders when necessary. Knowledge of multiplication facts through 10 is CRITICAL for success during this unit. Secure skills in this unit include identifying decimal place value to hundredths and dividing a 3-digit whole number or decimal by a 1-digit whole number or decimal.
Mrs. Savard's Math class is midway through Unit 3: Geometry. In this unit students learn about various types of angles and polygons. Secure skills include identifying place value to billions; defining and creating tessellations; estimating and measuring angles, and identifying types of angles and triangles.
Math Workshop 6th Grade:
Ms. Winther's and Mr. Bollom's Classes: Unit 4- Rational Number Uses and Operations. One goal of Sixth Grade Everyday Mathematics is to apply and extend many of the concepts that students were introduced to in Fifth Grade Everyday Mathematics.
Unit 4 has five main areas of focus: *to review the notations for rationalnumbers, fractions, mixed numbers, decimals, and percents *to review the ordering of fractions *to review operations (addition, subtraction and multiplication) with fractions and to extend the operationsto mixed numbers *to build connections between how the value of whole-and-decimal number quotients are maintained and how a division algorithm for fractions works *to review the meaning and uses of percents, and to solve problems involving percents and discounts Unit 5-Geometry:Congruence, Constructions and Parallel Lines. Unit 5 serves as a transition to the geometry taught in seventh and eighth grades. More attention is given to notation conventions, the application of geometric properties, and the naturalconnections between geometry and algebra. Unit 5 has five main areas of focus: *to classify and draw angles *to estimate the measure of angles with and without tools *to find angle measures and write equations by applying properties of orientations of angles and sums of angle measures in triangles and quadrangles *to identify and describe congruent figures; and to construct congruent figures using compass and straightedge *to identify, describe and sketch instances of reflections, translationsa and rotations on a coordinate plane
