Basic Weekly Homework
READING
1. READ: Students should read 15 minutes or more every night. Children
can
read themselves, read together with someone else or be read to. Please
give your child time to read independently. Each day’s reading should
be recorded on your
child’s reading log. Each month your child will get a new reading log.
SKILLS PRACTICE
2. ALPHABET LETTER/SOUND RELATIONSHIPS, LETTER FORMATION, WORD FAMILIES
AND WORD WALL PRACTICE: Students will have some short practice
activities to support the building blocks of reading and writing each
week.
MATH
3. EVERYDAY MATH HOMELINKS: Every week I will send home 3-5 Homelinks
or math practice activities. This may also include review or enrichment activities as needed for each child's individual growth.
Each week's homework will be due on Friday. If your child needs
extra time, they may use the weekend and hand in their homework on
Monday. I will send home materials your child will need to do their
homework each Monday. I will also post the homework assignment on the
website as well.
Ideally, homework should be done a little at
a time, 15-30 minutes a night. It should be a positive reinforcement of
our school work and not feel overwhelming. Please let me know if your
child is having difficulty or needs an extra challenge.
Please feel free to contact me at school (651-293-8770) or send me an email (marcia.woods-weisman@spps.org).

Challenge Homework It is the policy of HPE and the district that 30 minutes of homework is recommended for 1st graders. With 15 minutes of reading a night, that leaves 15 more minutes for other activities. It is our classroom policy that homework is assigned on Mon-Thu, with the weekend available to finish work unable to be completed during the week. Students are challenged each day in the classroom at their individual instructional level and the following recommendations are not intended to increase the time of students homework, but instead to provide options for advanced students to have a meaningful learning experience. Our main goal of 1st grade homework is to establish the practice and routine of daily reading and homework practices.
