May Newsletter 2008

Dear Families,

I want to thank all the parents for helping make the MCA II testing this spring successful for the Highland Park Elementary students.  Making sure students were eating healthy, rested and in school on time, made for a very smooth two weeks of testing.

It is hard to believe there are only 24 more days of school.   I know teachers and staff feel like there is not enough time left to accomplish everything we want and need to in the time that remains.  With that being said, it is important that students continue to come to school rested and ready to learn.  As a parent, I am struggling to maintain the healthy before school and after school routines as daylight gets longer and the weather nicer!  Please encourage your student(s) to get a healthy dose of outside activity but balance it with time talking about their day, reading together, helping them finish up homework and getting enough rest.

I am proud of all the accomplishments students have made over the course of this school year.   I continue to be amazed by the efforts of teachers and families to help their students be successful.  Just walking down the hallways, evidence of student success plasters the walls.  You can eavesdrop on classroom discussions that are deep and engaging.   Students are more than happy to discuss projects and share knowledge.  The building oozes with excitement and a strong sense of outstanding accomplishments.   It is easy to come to work everyday as I truly enjoy working with your wonderful children and the remarkable staff!

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take time to stop by and visit our Lost and Found in the entrance at the upper parking lot.  We have many very nice items of clothing collecting in our lost and found. Please check for any clothing items that you may be missing or may belong to your child. Any items remaining in the lost and found after the last day of school will be washed and donated to HPE or the Good Will.

Speaking of clothing, with the Minnesota weather as unpredictable as it is, please continue to send your children in layers.  Sometimes the building is cooler than outside.   It is helpful for students to continue learning when they are not too warm or too cold!

As requested in the April newsletter, parents interested in sharing information for teachers to use in developing class lists need to put their requests in writing either through email or letter and should identify your child's strengths, interests, learning style, successful environments and any other information about your child  that you feel would be helpful by Friday, May 2, 2008.  Reminder:   Please do not identify specific teachers.  There are many things staff consider when creating the classroom lists each year and often specific teacher requests can not be accommodated.  We will do our best to make sure your child is placed in the most optimal learning environment.

As always, my door is open and I continue to look forward to opportunities to partner with parents and families in promoting student success.

Sincerely,

Teresa Ciccarelli
