WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO AT HOME TO ENCOURAGE READERS:
1.
Encourage your kids to reach their goal of reading 25 books this year,
and celebrate each book completed. Plan small celebrations for
milestones, such as for every five books, and a larger celebration when
25 books are completed.
2. Help your kid select books that are challenging, but will not frustrate them.
3. Get everyone reading. Kids, parents, grandparents. . . make reading a basic part of | | Classroom Connections to Balanced Literacy | family life.
4.
Make bedtime reading a part of your family routine. Keep doing it as
long as your kids show an interest. Don't assume they are too old.
5.
Have lots of reading materials available. Use the library, pick up
books at garage sales, and exchange books with friends and neighbors.
6. Listen to your kids read.
7. Limit television viewing time. Do not let your kids resort to TV viewing because they can't think of anything else to do.
