Word Wall Words
Your child should practice reading and writing word wall words
Throughout the year each class adds more words to their word walls in
the classroom. Words that are put on the word wall are the common words
that students are expected to know because of their high usage. Also,
since they are posted in the classroom, students are expected to write
them correctly during Writer's Workshop. If you would like some tips on
practicing them with your Kindergartener at home just ask your
Kindergarten teacher! They have lots of ideas!

Welcome to Kindergarten!!

Kindergarten is an
exciting, dynamic place to learn, play and grow! Here we emphasize
academic, social, emotional, physical and cultural growth and learning
through a foundation of international study and citizenship. Our
learners become internationally-educated citizens through a focus on
the development of positive attitudes towards self, towards people,
towards the environment and towards learning. Life-long learning is
developed through inquiry-based, hands-on learning. The curriculum,
learning and attitudes are synthesized in the International
Baccalaureate Primary Years Program embodied in the student profile.
Please see the attached sheet for the attitudes and profiles.

Curriculum
is developed through the framework of the International Baccalaureate
Organization. Organizing Themes provide the structure for the school’s
framework of content, or program of inquiry. The natural curiosity of
young children is nurtured through Units of Inquiry. The Organizing
Themes and Units of Inquiry offer learners the opportunity to explore
and acquire essential knowledge and skills, and to develop positive
attitudes. The organizing themes and units of inquiry are:

1. Who We Are - All About Me
2. How the World Works - Harvest
3. How We Express Ourselves - Author & Illustrator Study
4. Where We Are In Time And Place - What’s In the Sky
5. Sharing The Planet - Animals Adapt to their Environment
6. How We Organize Ourselves – Market

It
is challenging and rewarding to teach and learn at Highland Park
Elementary. We are proud of our school community and enjoy learning and
working together! We look forward to meeting you and your learner.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Linda Lilja, Mrs. Sarah Woxland, and Mrs. Linda Mohn
