Volunteer in the Room! I encourage parents to volunteer in the room because it is beneficial for both the child and the classroom as a whole. Here are some ways you can volunteer: Once or Twice a Week You can volunteer for a half hour or an hour once or twice a week working with individuals or small groups. This would be most beneficial during Reader's Workshop, and Math. We are also going to need help every other week in the computer lab.  The students will be making a web page, and they will be in charge of updating it every other week. I anticipate needing one or two volunteers during this time! Other Other areas your assistance would be greatly appreciated is on field trips, during any in-school event, or sharing your talents with the class as it relates to a Unit of Inquiry. Essential Agreement The PTA put together a draft of an Essential Agreement for volunteers. If you are new to Highland, an Essential Agreement is a set of guidelines meant to help everyone understand expectations. Each class has an Essential Agreement for classroom behaviors, made by the students. Ask your child about it if you would like to know more! The PTA’s Volunteer Essential Agreement is as follows: 1. Respect the role of the classroom teacher as the teacher leader and volunteer supervisor. 2. Model the Student Profile. 3. Be familiar with the expectations of your involvement in each specific classroom, as it may differ from room to room. 4. Do not overstay your visit and avoid any unnecessary interruptions/distractions. 5. Consider volunteering in a classroom that is not your child’s in order to minimize any distraction that your presence my cause your child. 6. Check-in at the office and get a volunteer badge before going to the classroom. Important Dates!
